What helps me feel fulfilled as a therapist are not my degrees or years of experience in the field but the relationship I share with every one of my clients.
I might be feeling like an imposter sometimes even right before a session but once I close the session, I almost always feel a sense of relief and a regained sense of competence.
It’s because of the comfort of the therapeutic relationship we share, which allows me the privilege to use my knowledge in unique ways in every session.
So, thank you.
It’s what helps me when I am burdening myself with questions like "am I a good therapist’. That is the feeling I hold close to my heart.
By showing up every week, valuing commitment and believing in the process of therapy, my clients motivate me to show up for sessions with my therapist even when my mind tries to convince me ‘that I don’t need it’. After all, therapy spaces aren’t there just to deal with a stressful situation, but they also allow us to explore ourselves, our mind and body beyond the distress .
Sometimes when I struggle in my personal relationships, I am unable to be as empathetic towards people in my life as I am in the therapy spaces with my clients. It is because of the biases I hold that work for and/or against me. But when I enter into sessions with my clients it allows me to pause, separate from whatever I am going through and step into the shoes and world of my clients. At times that lens stays with me beyond the session allowing me to see my situation from a whole new perspective. I feel like a different person from when I entered the session and I am able to reassess my situation.
Humour plays a key role in my life and my therapy sessions. So when my clients share a funny story it stays with me. And thinking about those stories randomly or whenever I come across anything that resembles those instances, it brings a smile to my face.
Thank you for making me a part of your world. :)
